Nyla finally made it to the beach. It wasn’t the way she’d planned. No sunshine. No swimsuit. No dip in the ocean. Instead, she and Lucas took a moonlit walk along the shore where his hotel was located. They strolled together, side-by-side, walking partially on the soft sand and partially in the rolling tide that sporadically bathed her bare toes with warm frothy waves. Lucas looked at ease with his pants legs rolled up and his sandals clasped in one hand.

Nyla’s contented sigh penetrated their comfortable silence. “I think I was a mermaid in a former life.”

Lucas chuckled. “I can’t see you luring men to the sea, to their deaths.”

“No, those were sirens. Dangerous creatures with beautiful voices. I can’t sing to save my life. I would be a mermaid. Everybody loves mermaids.”

“Sorry. I get my mythological creatures confused.”

“What about you? Who do you think you were in a former life?”

He gazed up at the moon. “Probably a pirate.”

She laughed. “When I think about it, I guess pirates were the original action heroes.”

“Woman, I can swashbuckle with the best of ‘em. I’d be a captain, of course. And my first voyage would be to find a feisty mermaid who stands up to bullies.”

“The studio would kill for the rights to that story.”

He nodded. “The studio loves me as long as I’m making money for them. But sometimes, I want to try different roles. I think I’m being typecast as the ultimate action hero all the time. I’m not getting to show my range as an actor.”

“Your last two movies grossed the highest profits in the studio’s history. I think you could ask for whatever you want. If you want other roles, start demanding them. You’re worth it. They should do whatever it takes to keep you happy.”

“Wow. You should be my agent.”

“No thanks. I can only handle so much of the Stone drama.”

He bumped against her on purpose. “C’mon, you know you’re starting to like me and my drama.”

She laughed. “I think this salt air is messing with your brain.”

She joked, but she had to admit she understood him better now. It seemed crazy after only knowing him for a few days, but these brief glimpses into his private life gave her an eyeful. She meant all the things she’d said to Gerrod. This was why Lucas did what he did. He was starving for the attention he never got from childhood.

“Seriously. I’m glad you’re not going easy on me, feeling sorry for me because I’m like a dog licking his wounds.”

Shivers tiptoed down her spine at the thought of Lucas’s tongue licking anything. All of a sudden he was no longer the brash, asinine jerk she’d run into on the plane. He was human. He was real. He was vulnerable. The fact that he actually had a soft side was…enticing. And if his kisses were any indication, he could easily slip between gentle, demanding, or an arousing combination of both.

“I think people get the definition of a man’s man confused,” she said.
